2K Games has reportedly fired Michael Condrey, the president of its subsidiary studio, 31st Union. This decision comes on the heels of a lackluster reception to the studio's debut title, "Project Ethos," unveiled in October 2024.

Michael Condrey, known for his previous work co-founding Sledgehammer Games and directing titles like "Call of Duty: WWII," joined 2K to establish 31st Union in 2019. The studio was poised to make a significant impact with "Project Ethos," described as a free-to-play, third-person hero shooter with roguelike elements. Despite the anticipation, the game's reveal failed to capture the enthusiasm of either players or critics.

"Project Ethos" promised a unique blend of colorful aesthetics, hero-based gameplay, and roguelike mechanics, aiming to stand out in a crowded market. However, the game's announcement was met with a lukewarm response, with some previews highlighting an "identity crisis" and failing to deliver something truly innovative.

This underwhelming reception seems to have played a pivotal role in 2K's decision. According to various reports, Condrey was removed from his position on February 3, 2025. 2K has stated that Condrey will transition into an advisory role, focusing on the future of "Project Ethos." However, the exact direction of the game remains uncertain, with 2K emphasizing their commitment to both the project and the studio.

In an official statement to Kotaku, a 2K spokesperson expressed gratitude for Condrey's contributions, stating, "We are grateful to Michael Condrey for the dedication, passion, and work ethic it took to build an incredible team and shape the vision of 31st Union. Michael will be transitioning his role in the short term to focus on advising on the future of Project ETHOS. We remain very committed to the forward path for Project ETHOS and the people and culture of the 31st Union studio."

The gaming industry has had mixed reactions. While some see this as a necessary business decision, others are concerned about the stability of the project and the implications for the team at 31st Union. The gaming community on platforms like X has been vocal, with posts reflecting disappointment and speculation about the game's future.

As 2K navigates this transition, all eyes are on how "Project Ethos" will evolve. The studio's commitment to the game suggests that development will continue, though under new leadership or with a different strategy. The industry will be watching closely to see if 2K can salvage the project and turn it into a success story, or if it will join the ranks of other ambitious projects that didn't meet expectations.

The firing of Michael Condrey marks a significant moment for 31st Union and 2K Games. It underscores the high stakes and often unforgiving nature of the gaming industry, where even experienced leaders can face abrupt changes based on project performance. As "Project Ethos" moves forward, the gaming world will be keenly interested in how this narrative unfolds, whether it leads to redemption or further challenges for 2K's new venture.
