Conor McGregor, the former UFC champion and global sports icon, has declared his intention to run for President of Ireland in 2025. The announcement, made during a press conference in Dublin on March 21, 2025, marks a dramatic shift for the 36-year-old fighter, who has long been a polarizing figure in the world of mixed martial arts and beyond.

McGregor, dressed in a tailored three-piece suit rather than his usual fight gear, addressed a packed room of journalists and supporters with his characteristic bravado. “I’ve conquered the octagon, I’ve built businesses, and now it’s time to take on the biggest fight of all—leading this country,” he declared, his voice booming with confidence. “Ireland deserves a leader who’s fearless, who’s real, and who gets things done. That’s me.”

The announcement comes at a time when Ireland’s political landscape is ripe for disruption. With the next presidential election scheduled for November 2025, McGregor’s entry into the race adds an unpredictable wildcard to an already contentious field. While the presidency in Ireland is largely a ceremonial role, with limited executive power, it carries significant cultural weight and serves as a symbol of national identity—something McGregor claims he embodies.

“I’m not here to play politics as usual,” McGregor said, pacing the stage with the energy of a prizefighter. “I’m here to shake things up. I’ve been a voice for the people—working-class, dreamers, fighters—and I’ll bring that same fire to Áras an Uachtaráin.”

McGregor’s candidacy is not entirely out of left field. Over the years, he has cultivated a larger-than-life persona, blending his athletic achievements with a keen business acumen. His whiskey brand, Proper No. Twelve, became a global success, and his outspoken nature has kept him in the public eye long after his peak fighting days. In recent months, he has hinted at a growing interest in public service, often speaking out on issues like immigration, economic opportunity, and national pride during interviews and public appearances.

Critics, however, are quick to point out his lack of political experience and the controversies that have dogged his career, including legal troubles and brash behavior. Political analyst Siobhán O’Connell remarked, “McGregor’s charisma is undeniable, but the presidency isn’t a cage fight. It requires diplomacy and nuance—qualities he hasn’t exactly demonstrated in abundance.”

Supporters, on the other hand, see his outsider status as a strength. “He’s not a politician, and that’s why we love him,” said Liam Byrne, a Dublin native who attended the press conference. “He’s one of us, and he’ll fight for Ireland like he fought in the UFC.”

To run for president, McGregor must secure a nomination, either by garnering the support of 20 members of the Oireachtas (Ireland’s parliament) or four county councils. While his fame might sway local leaders, it remains to be seen whether his celebrity can translate into the political backing required. The Irish Constitution also stipulates that candidates must be at least 35 years old and an Irish citizen—criteria McGregor easily meets.

During the press conference, McGregor outlined a vague but populist platform, promising to “put Ireland first” and champion the working class. He spoke of boosting tourism, supporting small businesses, and promoting Irish culture on the world stage—perhaps a nod to his own success as a global ambassador for the country. When pressed for specifics, he deflected with a grin: “Details are coming, folks. I don’t rush a fight plan, and I won’t rush this.”

Whether McGregor’s presidential bid is a serious endeavor or an elaborate publicity stunt remains a topic of debate. His team has already launched a slick campaign website, complete with merchandise emblazoned with slogans like “The People’s President” and “Notorious Leader.” The branding suggests he’s approaching this with the same marketing savvy that turned him into a household name.

As the news reverberates across Ireland and beyond, one thing is certain: Conor McGregor has once again captured the world’s attention. Whether he can parlay his fame into a successful political career—or even make it onto the ballot—will be a spectacle worth watching. For now, the “Notorious” one has stepped into a new arena, and he’s swinging for the top job.
