First Severe H5N1 Bird Flu Case in US Confirmed in Louisiana

​The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the first severe case of H5N1 bird flu in a human in the United States. The patient, from Louisiana, was hospitalized after exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks, marking a significant moment in the country's ongoing surveillance of the virus.

The CDC announced the confirmation on Friday, detailing that the individual had contracted the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, known scientifically as H5N1. This strain is notorious for its ability to cause severe illness in birds and, occasionally, in humans.
