Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly planning to run for the position of New York City Mayor, with a strategic focus on appealing to both moderate and Jewish voters. According to recent reports:

There is significant interest from the Jewish community in supporting Cuomo, particularly among those identifying as moderate or conservative. This support stems from Cuomo's historical connections with Jewish groups and his strong pro-Israel stance. His previous engagements and advocacy through initiatives like "Progressives for Israel" have positioned him favorably among these voters, despite past controversies related to his handling of the Jewish community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cuomo's potential candidacy is seen as viable if Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently facing legal challenges, either resigns or chooses not to run for re-election. There's a sentiment among some political observers and within the Jewish community that Cuomo could capitalize on a political vacuum left by Adams, especially in a scenario where a special election might be called, allowing for a broader voter base beyond just Democratic primaries.

Despite his political baggage from past sexual harassment allegations and policy decisions during his governorship, polls indicate a split in public opinion about his entry into the mayor's race. Some see his name recognition as an asset, while others remain skeptical due to his past controversies.

Cuomo's team is reportedly setting up an Independent Expenditure (IE) operation and has been in discussions with Orthodox Jewish leaders, indicating a targeted approach to securing the Jewish vote, which is significant in New York City politics.

While Cuomo has a base of support, there's also considerable opposition. A substantial portion of voters, according to polls, do not want him to run, reflecting the divisive nature of his political persona. His past actions, like the controversial COVID-19 restrictions on religious gatherings, still resonate negatively with some segments of the Jewish community.

The political landscape suggests that Cuomo's path to the mayor's office would be fraught with both opportunities, given his historical support among certain demographics, and challenges due to his past controversies. The Jewish community's response appears mixed, with some ready to rally behind him for his pro-Israel stance and moderate views, while others remain critical of his previous policies during the health crisis.
