General Motors (GM) rolled out a $60 billion blueprint today to dominate the electric truck market, unveiled by CEO Mary Barra at the company’s Detroit investor day. The five-year plan targets heavy-duty EVs like the Silverado EV RST and a new electric Hummer pickup, aiming to capture fleet operators and eco-minded buyers. Barra called it “a cornerstone of America’s electric future,” tying GM’s legacy to the green revolution.

The investment will fund three new factories in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, with construction kicking off in early 2026. These plants will churn out 200,000 electric trucks annually by 2028, powered by GM’s Ultium battery platform—touted for its 400-mile range and fast-charging chops. Barra highlighted a deal with FedEx to supply 5,000 EV delivery vans, signaling big commercial demand. The focus on trucks sets GM apart from rivals like Ford, who’ve leaned into smaller EVs.

This isn’t just about volume—GM’s chasing profitability too. The company’s banking on economies of scale and a $2 billion federal EV tax credit to keep prices competitive, targeting a $50,000 base for the Silverado EV. Barra also teased a modular battery design that could slash repair costs, a jab at Tesla’s pricier fixes. Analysts peg GM’s EV division breaking even by 2027, a faster clip than Ford’s projected timeline.

The backdrop’s a surging truck market—U.S. sales hit 12 million last year, with EVs grabbing 8% thanks to gas prices hovering at $4 a gallon. GM’s leaning into that, pitching its trucks as rugged enough for construction yet clean enough for city mandates. The Ohio plant will double as a battery recycling hub, aiming to reuse 90% of materials and cut reliance on overseas cobalt, a sore spot for the industry.

Labor’s a wild card, though. The United Auto Workers (UAW), fresh off a 2024 strike, welcomed the 20,000 promised jobs but wants guarantees on wages and training. Barra pledged “fair transitions” for gas-engine workers, though details are thin—some fear automation will shrink the headcount long-term. Community leaders in Detroit see it as a lifeline, with the city still clawing back from decades of decline.

Environmentalists are cautiously on board. The factories will tap Michigan’s hydropower and solar, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2035—a tall order given steel and battery production’s carbon footprint. Critics say GM’s late to the EV party, trailing Tesla’s head start, but Barra brushed that off: “We’re not first, but we’ll be best.” Stock jumped 4%, reflecting investor faith in the pivot.

The road ahead’s bumpy—supply chain snags and a potential lithium shortage loom. GM’s secured deals with miners in Nevada and Canada, but prices are volatile. Still, today’s splash signals Detroit’s doubling down on electrification, with GM betting its truck legacy can carry it into the next era. Rivals better buckle up.
