Google Loses Landmark Antitrust Case, Declared a Monopoly by Federal Judge

In a landmark decision that could have far-reaching implications for the tech industry, a federal judge ruled on Monday that Google violated antitrust law by maintaining a monopoly on search and search advertising markets. The ruling comes after a year-long trial that pitted the U.S. Justice Department against Google in the country's biggest antitrust showdown in a quarter century.

Judge Amit Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia found that Google's ubiquitous search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to squash competition and stifle innovation. The court held that Google has monopoly power in two relevant product markets: general search services and general search text ads.

The ruling criticizes Google's deals with Apple and other companies as anticompetitive and harmful to competition. The court specifically found that Google's distribution agreements, which make Google the default search engine on various devices and browsers, are exclusive and have prevented rivals from gaining a foothold in the market.

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," Judge Mehta wrote in his opinion. "The court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly."

The ruling marks a major victory for federal regulators trying to reign in the power of big tech. It is likely to send shock-waves through the tech world and could lead to significant changes in how Google operates its search business.

Google's search engine has become the centerpiece of a digital advertising machine that generated nearly $240 billion in revenue last year. The potential outcome of the ruling could result in a wide-ranging order requiring Google to dismantle some of the pillars of its internet empire or prevent it from shelling out billions of dollars annually to ensure its search engine automatically answers queries on the iPhone and other internet-connected devices.

The ruling follows a landmark antitrust trial that concluded in DC in May. The trial depicted Google as a technological bully that methodically has thwarted competition to protect a search engine that has become the centerpiece of a digital advertising machine.

The case is reminiscent of the antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in the late 1990s, which accused the software giant of abusing the dominance of its Windows operating system on personal computers to lock out competition. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was one of the Justice Department's star witnesses during the trial, testifying about his frustration with Google deals that made it nearly impossible for Microsoft's Bing search engine to make any headway.

The ruling is a major blow to Google and could have significant implications for the future of the tech industry. It remains to be seen what remedies the court will impose to restore competition in the search market.
