Law enforcement officials announced tonight that a suspect has been taken into custody in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University two days earlier. Authorities said the 22-year-old man was brought to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office after turning himself in to local law enforcement following contact from family and community members.

The suspect, identified by state officials as Tyler James Robinson, was booked on suspicion of aggravated murder and related felonies, a jail booking record shows. Prosecutors said they are continuing to develop the case and will determine formal charges in the coming days as investigators process evidence from the scene.

Officials described Robinson’s arrest as the culmination of a coordinated effort by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies that included the FBI, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, and Utah Department of Public Safety. Authorities had been working around the clock since Wednesday afternoon to track leads and sift through video and forensic evidence.

According to a timeline released by investigators, Robinson was identified in surveillance images disseminated to the public. After the suspect’s face appeared in widely circulated photos and video stills, family members recognized him and, with the help of a family friend connected to law enforcement, persuaded him to surrender to authorities. Officials said the surrender was peaceful and the man was taken into custody without incident.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox, flanked by federal and state law enforcement leaders at an evening news briefing, said, “We got him,” and thanked the public and the suspect’s family for helping bring the search to an end. Governor Cox emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional steps are needed before prosecutions proceed.

Investigators said the manhunt lasted roughly 33 hours and covered multiple counties after security footage suggested the shooter left the Orem area heading south following the campus attack. Teams reviewed thousands of hours of video, interviewed witnesses and canvassed neighborhoods as they followed a path investigators believe the suspect took.

Law enforcement reiterated that their priority was to secure the suspect and preserve evidence. Early forensic work at the scene and along the suspected route is ongoing; authorities said they recovered items of interest in wooded areas near campus and at locations where the suspect was believed to have paused. Officials declined to discuss specifics of the evidence while it is being cataloged.

FBI officials confirmed that a reward of up to $100,000 had been offered for information leading to an arrest, and praised the flow of tips and publicly posted footage that enabled them to refine leads quickly. The agency asked anyone who filmed the event or who had photographic evidence to submit it to an FBI tip portal to aid investigators.

Though his arrest marks a major development, prosecutors cautioned that questions remain about motive, planning and whether others were involved. Authorities said they have not established a clear motive publicly and that the investigation will continue to look for any accomplices, communications, or materials that would help explain why the suspect allegedly targeted Kirk.

Charlie Kirk died Wednesday after being shot during an outdoor speaking event at UVU where he had been taking questions from students and supporters. The killing sparked an immediate nationwide outpouring of grief and renewed debate over political rhetoric and safety at public events. Tonight’s arrest drew both relief and sober reflection from politicians and community leaders.

In a brief statement this evening, Turning Point USA expressed gratitude to law enforcement for the arrest and asked for privacy as they mourn. University officials said the campus will remain closed tomorrow to allow investigators to continue their work and to provide counseling services to students and staff.

National political leaders reacted quickly to the news. Several prominent voices called for calm and restraint while the legal process unfolds, and urged that the focus remain on a full and transparent investigation rather than speculation. Others framed the arrest in the context of mounting concerns about political violence across the country.

Tonight’s development ends an intense overnight search and puts the case squarely in the hands of prosecutors who have said they will weigh whether to seek the most serious charges available under Utah law. Legal experts say the coming days will include a probable-cause review, a formal charging decision and an initial court appearance for the suspect.

As families and supporters on both sides of the political divide continue to process the shooting and its aftermath, investigators appealed for patience and urged anyone with additional footage, dashcam video, or interactions with the suspect in the hours after the shooting to come forward. Officials said those pieces of information could be crucial to building a thorough case.

For now, the arrest answers one urgent question but raises many more. How the suspect allegedly carried out the attack, why he chose that day and place, and whether the act was planned or impulsive will all be central to an investigation that investigators say will continue into the coming weeks.
