Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was assassinated in a brazen attack outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan. The incident, which took place early Wednesday morning, has led to a massive manhunt for the suspected shooter, described by authorities as a light-skinned male wearing a distinctive gray backpack.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Thompson was shot at point-blank range around 6:44 a.m. on December 4, as he was crossing the street to attend UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference at the hotel. The attack was captured on surveillance video, showing the assailant lying in wait before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny detailed the sequence of events at a press conference, stating, "The shooter arrived at the location on foot about five minutes prior to the victim’s arrival. He stands along the building line as numerous other people and pedestrians pass him by." This suggests the attack was premeditated and targeted specifically at Thompson.

The suspect managed to escape the scene on an electric bike, heading north towards Central Park. He was last seen near the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, leading police to believe he might have fled the city via interstate bus. The NYPD has released photos of the suspect, who was seen at a nearby Starbucks shortly before the shooting, buying a bottle of water and two protein bars.

The investigation has quickly gained momentum, with detectives piecing together the suspect's movements through extensive video surveillance from around the city. A backpack believed to belong to the shooter was discovered in Central Park on Friday evening, containing a Tommy Hilfiger jacket and Monopoly money but no firearm. Police are also examining shell casings from the crime scene, which bore the words "delay," "deny," and "depose," hinting at a possible motive tied to discontent with the insurance industry.

The assassination has sent shockwaves through the corporate world, particularly in the health insurance sector, prompting companies to reassess executive security measures. UnitedHealthcare released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Thompson's death, emphasizing his contributions and leadership within the company.

Public reaction has been mixed, with many expressing horror over the act but also using the moment to voice frustrations with the healthcare insurance industry. Social media platforms have seen an uptick in discussions about the ethics of insurance companies and their impact on patient care.

The NYPD, with assistance from the FBI, is conducting a nationwide search for the suspect. A reward of up to $60,000 has been offered for information leading to his capture, combining NYPD's $10,000 with an additional $50,000 from the FBI. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to comb through evidence, including fingerprints, DNA, and surveillance footage, to bring the perpetrator to justice.

As the manhunt continues, the city mourns the loss of a prominent business leader, and the nation watches closely as one of the most high-profile investigations in recent times unfolds.
