Nestled along the picturesque coast of St. Augustine, Florida, stands a beacon of maritime history and mystery: the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Built between 1871 and 1875, this 165-foot-tall structure has been the site of numerous tragedies and paranormal occurrences throughout its history. In this chilling blog post, we will delve into the horrors of the St. Augustine Lighthouse hauntings, exploring the eerie and unexplained phenomena that have captivated the imaginations of ghost hunters and visitors alike.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse, with its rich history and tragic past, is considered one of the most haunted spots in the ancient city. While there are several stories of hauntings and spirits, the one that captures the most attention is the tragic story of the Pittee girls.

Hezekiah Pittee, the superintendent of the lighthouse construction, relocated from Camp Elizabeth, Maine with his family to oversee the project. The children loved to play on the grounds of the lighthouse construction, including riding a railway cart between the building site and the docks. Tragically, on July 10, 1873, three of the Pittee girls, Mary (15), Eliza (13), and Carrie (4), along with another girl were riding the cart when it plunged into the water.

In the aftermath of the accident, both the construction site and the town came to a standstill as they mourned the loss of the girls, with the entire community joining together to pay their respects at the funeral. Visitors and staff have reported eerie encounters and unexplained phenomena around the lighthouse, often attributed to the presence of the Pittee sisters' restless spirits.

Some claim to have heard the faint laughter of children echoing through the corridors, while others report seeing ghostly apparitions playing near the water's edge. Visitors to the St. Augustine Lighthouse have reported seeing various ghostly phenomena, including unexplained noises, cold spots, and apparitions. Some people claim to have seen the spirits of two little girls, believed to be the Pittee sisters, who tragically drowned near the lighthouse in 1873. Others have reported seeing a dark, shadowy figure that is thought to be the ghost of a former lighthouse keeper.

A fun way to try and experience the hauntings at the St. Augustine Lighthouse is to take part in one of their Dark of the Moon Ghost Tours. These tours allow visitors to explore the lighthouse and grounds at night, giving them a chance to potentially witness paranormal activity. During the tour, you will learn about the history of the lighthouse and the various ghost stories associated with it. The tour also includes access to the lighthouse tower, where many visitors have reported strange occurrences.

Another activity to try is to bring an audio recorder or use a ghost hunting app on your phone to capture any electronic voice phenomena (EVP) that may occur during your visit. Some visitors have reported capturing unexplained voices on their recordings while exploring the lighthouse and its surroundings.

Cuba Road is located in Barrington, Illinois. The mysterious road will greet you with its winding lanes, enveloped in lush greenery and irregularity that exuded a charm unmatched by typical suburban monotony. Stirring the imagination more than sprawling suburbs ever could, Cuba Road possessed an undercurrent of mystery. As you navigate the shadowy bends and tree-lined stretches, a sense of foreboding will consume you. The sway of branches in the breeze seem like ominous signals of the paranormal. Unlike well-lit suburban streets that offer clear visibility for miles ahead, Cuba Road was a dark rural route ripe for urban legends.

These legends recount various encounters ranging from benign to outright perilous. Each tale carries an unsettling element that adds to the allure of Cuba Road. For instance, there are reports of two ghost cars haunting the road. One is a simple black car, often mistaken for a limousine, that abruptly disappears. The other is a pickup truck with blazing high beams, tailing unsuspecting drivers before vanishing into thin air. Spectral hitchhikers also make an appearance, with witnesses claiming to have glimpsed a cigar-smoking gangster in their backseat.

Barrington's history, intertwined with the defiance of Prohibition, lends credence to these tales. Bootleggers once smuggled booze along these backroads, and the secluded town offered mobsters a quiet retreat between Chicago, Illinois and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It's no wonder that the ghostly apparitions on Cuba Road are often associated with this era.

White Cemetery, a focal point of many stories, is said to harbor romantic phantoms and mysterious lights among its tombstones. The tombstones in White Cemetery date back to the 19th century, reflecting the rich history of Barrington and its surrounding areas. Many of these tombstones bear inscriptions detailing the lives and legacies of the individuals buried there, offering a glimpse into the past. The old tombstones exhibit signs of weathering and decay, adding to the cemetery's haunting ambiance. Moss-covered graves and crumbling headstones contribute to the eerie atmosphere, evoking a sense of timelessness and mortality.

The cemetery is infamous for sightings of romantic phantoms strolling hand in hand among the tombstones. Witnesses claim to have seen spectral couples wandering the graveyard, evoking a sense of tragedy and longing. Strange lights and floating orbs have been reported among the tombstones, adding to the eerie ambiance of the cemetery. These glowing apparitions are often interpreted as signs of paranormal activity by visitors.

According to local lore, drivers traveling along the road adjacent to White Cemetery may encounter a spectral figure wandering along the roadside. This apparition, often described as a woman dressed in white, is said to carry a lantern and appear suddenly, as if out of thin air.

As drivers approach the mysterious figure, she signals for them to pull over, her lantern casting an eerie glow in the darkness. Some compassionate souls, intrigued by the woman's ethereal presence, have stopped to offer assistance, believing her to be in need of help.

However, those who have attempted to aid the vanishing lady are met with a disconcerting surprise. As they slow their vehicle and roll down their window to offer assistance, the woman suddenly disappears before their eyes, leaving behind only an empty roadside and a lingering sense of unease.

In addition to apparitions, Cuba Road boasts a disappearing mansion that vanishes before the eyes of observers. Witnesses have reported seeing a structure in the distance, only for it to disappear upon closer inspection, leaving behind no trace of its existence, and still to this day there is an eerie gravel trail leading to the ruins of an old insane asylum.

Down a few feet from White Cemetery, there is an old train track. According to this legend, if you park your car on the tracks and put it in neutral, the ghostly spirits of children who died in a tragic school bus accident will push your car to safety. The benevolent spirits now roam the area, eager to prevent others from suffering the same fate.

Those brave enough to test the legend often report feeling a mysterious force pushing their car, despite no visible or physical explanation for the movement. Some even claim to see tiny handprints on the rear of their vehicle afterward, as if the ghostly children had indeed lent their assistance.

Adjacent to White Cemetery and connected to Cuba Road is another winding trail called Rainbow Road. The road's scenic beauty adds to its allure, drawing visitors seeking both natural serenity and supernatural thrills. At the end of Rainbow Road, there are purported sightings of the ruins of an old mansion or farmhouse, depending on the version of the story. Some locals believe that these remnants are the remains of part of the abandoned asylum, adding a sinister twist to the area's haunted reputation.

Visitors to Rainbow Road have reported hearing eerie cries emanating from the vicinity of the ruins. These disembodied voices add to the sense of unease and mystery surrounding the location, fueling speculation about its dark past. Strange lights, ghostly apparitions, and unexplained phenomena have been reported by those brave enough to venture into the area after dark.

According to local lore, drivers traveling along Rainbow Road late at night may encounter a mysterious figure standing by the side of the road, thumb extended in a hitchhiking gesture. Despite the remote location and the late hour, some compassionate drivers have stopped to offer assistance to the hitchhiker, only to be met with an eerie surprise.

Those who have picked up the mysterious hitchhiker report a sense of unease as they continue along the darkened road. The figure is described as silent and unnervingly still, radiating an aura of otherworldly chill. As the driver nervously glances in the rearview mirror, they are shocked to find the hitchhiker gone without a trace, leaving behind only an empty seat and a lingering sense of dread.

In some versions of the story, the hitchhiker is said to vanish from the moving vehicle itself, disappearing into thin air as if they were never there. Others claim to have witnessed the figure gradually fade away as they approach their destination, leaving behind nothing but a haunting memory of their encounter.

Despite the skepticism of some, reports of the phantom hitchhiker persist among the local community, adding to the mystique and allure of Rainbow Road. Whether a cautionary tale to wary travelers or a chilling reminder of the unknown that lurks in the darkness, the story of the phantom hitchhiker continues to intrigue those who dare to venture down the haunted trail.

While Cuba and Rainbow Roads are just one of many haunted locales in Illinois, their atmospheric setting and rich legends make it a magnet for supernatural thrill-seekers. Whether believers or skeptics, visitors come with their own expectations and interpretations. Some seek proof of the paranormal, while others aim to debunk the myths. Regardless of one's stance, these roads offer an experience that lingers long after the journey ends.
