Apple has made a strategic move in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) by acquiring the Canadian start-up DarwinAI, a significant step ahead of its anticipated foray into generative AI in 2024.  Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the tech giant finalized the acquisition earlier this year, with numerous DarwinAI employees now integrated into Apple's AI division.

​While DarwinAI's AI technology spans various applications, including visual component inspection in manufacturing, its expertise in compressing AI systems to enhance efficiency holds particular significance for Apple's focus on on-device AI processing.

The acquisition generated positive market response, with Apple's shares experiencing a brief uptick of over 1%, reaching US$173.37, before settling at $172.92 in New York trading.
