Biden's Approval Rating Plummets To Historic Lows Tying Jimmy Carter

President Joe Biden finds himself treading in dangerous waters. As of the latest data from Gallup, Biden's approval rating has hit a historic low, tying with President Jimmy Carter for the second-lowest 13th-quarter average approval rating for any president since World War II. With an average of 38.7%, Biden is now facing a political challenge that echoes the trials faced by President Carter in the late 1970s.

The comparison between Biden and Carter is striking, not just because of the similar approval ratings but also due to the economic and geopolitical challenges both presidents have faced during their respective terms. In the late 1970s, Carter faced the Iran hostage crisis, stagflation, and a general sense of American malaise. Biden, on the other hand, is grappling with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation, and international tensions.

While it is natural for any president to face challenges during their term, the comparison to Carter is particularly significant because of the latter's electoral fate. Carter lost his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan in a historic landslide. This raises the question: will history repeat itself for Biden?

Some experts argue that Biden's low approval rating is a reflection of the current state of American politics, where polarization and partisanship are at an all-time high. This is evident in the significant partisan gap in Biden's approval ratings, with an average of 83% of Democrats and only 5% of Republicans approving of the job he is doing.

Others point to specific issues that have contributed to Biden's approval rating decline. For instance, the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, rising inflation, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict are all factors that have played a role in shaping public opinion.

It’s worth noting that while Biden's approval rating is low, it is not necessarily a predictor of electoral success. Political fortunes can change rapidly, and the dynamics of the 2024 election are yet to fully unfold.
