Desantis Announces Florida State Parks Open Doors For Free And Tax-Free Summer Fun

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a series of initiatives aimed at encouraging Floridians to explore the state's natural beauty and enjoy a range of recreational activities tax-free. The announcements were made during a press conference in Tampa on April 30, 2024.

Starting with the Memorial Day weekend, all state parks in Florida will offer free entry to residents from May 25th to 28th. This move is part of the "Summer of Freedom" campaign, which aims to promote family bonding and outdoor exploration during the summer months. Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of connecting with the "real Florida" and cherishing the state's natural resources.

In addition to free park entry, the "Freedom Sales Tax Holiday" will return for the entire month of July. This initiative will make a range of outdoor-related purchases and activities tax-free. Among the items and services that will be exempt from sales tax are general outdoor supplies, camping supplies, fishing and boating equipment, pool supplies, sunscreen, and bug spray, as well as bicycles under $500. The sales tax holiday will also extend to admissions to movies, live music, sporting events, festivals, fairs, and state parks and museums. Annual passes for state parks will also be tax-free during this period.

Governor DeSantis highlighted the success of a similar initiative in the fall of the previous year, when Florida offered a 50% discount on annual state park passes. He hopes that these measures will encourage residents to engage in outdoor activities and support local businesses that cater to the state's recreational industry.

Critics of sales tax holidays argue that they are an ineffective way to stimulate the economy, as they merely shift the timing of purchases rather than creating new demand. However, Governor DeSantis and his supporters believe that these initiatives will not only benefit Florida residents but also contribute to the state's tourism industry.

With these measures in place, Florida is set to enjoy a summer of free park entry and tax-free outdoor fun. Whether it's a family camping trip, a day at the beach, or a concert under the stars, Floridians can look forward to a season of unforgettable experiences and savings.
