Ivermectin: From Parasite Fighter To Cancer Fighter? New Research Sparks Debate

A recent surge of studies and discussions have emerged around the potential use of the anti-parasitic drug, Ivermectin, in the fight against cancer. This development has sparked both interest and controversy, as the drug, known for its use in treating various parasitic diseases, is now being investigated for its possible role in cancer treatment.

Dr. Peter P. Lee, chair of the immuno-oncology department at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in California, has led research into the use of Ivermectin in combination with a specific antibody, referred to as anti-PD1, for treating breast cancer. The research has yielded positive results in mice, suggesting that Ivermectin could play a role in inducing cancer cell death and allowing T cells to infiltrate tumors.

But the story doesn't end there. Dr. Susanne Arnold, associate director for clinical translation at the Markey Cancer Center in Kentucky, has also noted that there have been early studies exploring Ivermectin's potential in slowing cancer cell growth or treating tumors.

Despite these promising developments, the narrative around Ivermectin has been fraught with controversy. It has been a subject of debate during the COVID-19 pandemic, with some individuals and groups touting it as a cure for the virus, despite the lack of evidence supporting its efficacy against COVID-19. This has led to a polarized view of the drug, with some seeing it as a potential miracle cure and others dismissing it entirely.

Adding to the complexity, a lawsuit was filed in June 2022 by Drs. Rober Apter, Mary Talley Bowden, and Paul Marik against the FDA, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and their leaders. The lawsuit claimed that the FDA's statements about Ivermectin and COVID-19 had harmed their practice. The FDA has since settled the lawsuit, agreeing to remove and archive certain posts and materials as required by law.

Amidst this controversy, the scientific community continues to explore Ivermectin's potential in cancer treatment. Recent studies have suggested that Ivermectin can inhibit the proliferation, metastasis, and angiogenic activity of cancer cells, and may even induce programmed cancer cell death.

As the research progresses, the debate around Ivermectin is likely to continue. The potential for repurposing this well-known drug in the fight against cancer presents an intriguing possibility that could significantly impact cancer treatment in the future. However, much more research is needed to validate these findings and explore Ivermectin's potential in human cancer treatment.
