McConnell, who recently turned 82, surprised many of his colleagues with the announcement on the Senate floor, stating, "This will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate."

Despite his decision to retire from leadership, McConnell emphasized his commitment to serving out his term until January 2027 and continuing to lead his conference through the upcoming election, remarking, "I’m not going anywhere any time soon." Reflecting on his career, McConnell shared his gratitude and humility, acknowledging, "I just never could have imagined — never could have imagined that happening when I arrived here in 1984 at 42."
