Pfizer Settles 10,000 Zantac Cancer Lawsuits Amidst Ongoing Legal Battles

Pfizer Inc. has agreed to settle over 10,000 lawsuits accusing the company of failing to warn patients about potential cancer risks from the popular heartburn medication Zantac. The settlement marks a major development in a series of legal battles that have plagued the pharmaceutical giant over the last few years.

The saga began when concerns were raised about the presence of the carcinogenic substance N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in Zantac. This led to a series of recalls and a wave of lawsuits claiming that the drug, widely used to treat heartburn and other stomach issues, had caused various forms of cancer. The legal actions sought to hold Pfizer, among other manufacturers, accountable for allegedly hiding these risks from consumers.

However, it does not completely resolve Pfizer's exposure to Zantac claims, as there are more than 70,000 Zantac lawsuits still pending in Delaware alone, where a judge is currently evaluating the scientific evidence underlying these cases.

Sanofi acquired the drug in 2017 and subsequently recalled it in 2019 after an independent lab released tests showing NDMA in the drug and its generics. The FDA confirmed these findings in April 2020 and ordered the removal of all versions of the medicine from the market.
