During a press briefing held on Monday afternoon, authorities and local officials in Houston shared new insights into Sunday's shooting incident at Lakewood Church. Commander Christopher Hassig of the HPD homicide unit characterized the perpetrator, 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, as a "lone wolf" with a history of mental health challenges. Moreno, who identified as a leftist transgender woman, arrived at the church wearing a trench coat and carrying multiple weapons ahead of a Spanish-language service.

Hassig informed the gathered press that prior to the shooting, Moreno retrieved her 7-year-old son from her white vehicle parked on Timmons Lane. She then confronted a security guard outside the building around 1:53 p.m. The guard allowed her entry, after which Moreno immediately engaged in gunfire with HPD officer Christopher Moreno and TABC officer Adrian Herrera. Moreno was armed with an AR-15, and a second weapon—a .22 caliber rifle—was discovered in a backpack she carried. A sticker with the word "Palestine" adorned one of the guns found in Moreno's possession, as reported by ABC News. Investigators are currently examining Moreno's social media and writings to ascertain a motive for the attack.

Genesse Ivonne Moreno, the individual who entered Lakewood Church on Sunday with a long rifle and a child, has been positively identified by multiple sources. It was revealed that Moreno, who previously identified as Jeffrey Escalante, had a history of prior arrests for offenses including assault, forgery, marijuana possession, theft, evading arrest, and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to KHOU's Jeremy Rogalski. Records from the Texas Department of Public Safety indicate a criminal history dating back to 2005.

Following the Sunday shooting, members of the FBI, Conroe Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Houston Police Department, and Texas Rangers converged on a Conroe residence to gather evidence and piece together details of the incident. The shooter, while accompanied by a 5-year-old, entered the Houston mega-church wearing a trench coat and carrying a backpack she claimed contained explosives. However, no explosives were discovered in her possession or in her vehicle.
